12 Week Old Aussie And Cats

by Katie
(GA)

I have a 12 weeks old Aussie and two 8 month old cats. He has taken to chasing, jumping and even snipping at them and their tails whenever they are in reach. How do I stop this behavior?

Thanks,
Katie

Shepherds will shepherd. If she has claws she'll handle the shepherd quite effectively. Mine doesn't. Both are hearing impaired. If my cat goes up the stairs to "where she belongs," my Aussie happy. He doesnt go up the stairs YET. My Aussie is 5 months old. I haven't solved this problem yet. Think I will try "leave it" sign and positive persistent training with treats. (And the treat is not kitty). #-#

Cats and Aussies

Raised my pup ( 3 years old now) with a 1 year old cat and a 11 year old. We watched and stopped any behavior that was too rough. They all get along,. We can trust them alone. Now young cat and dog are best friends and imitate each other.
They sort it out by a swat or a hiss or just leave.

In fact the Aussie is so well accustomed to cats at this point that he can hang out in a cat hospital without issues.

Be patient , it will come.

I have two aussies and four cats. Believe me when I say things aren't ever going to be perfect. They won't be horrible either. Give your cat plenty of safe zones and things should be cool. My dogs only chase if one of my cats darts suddenly. The cats will stand their ground and the dogs know this and will back away. One of my cat loves my Red merle so much that they sleep together. Good luck
