Basic Leash Training

The leash is a useful training tool. You'll use it to direct and maintain your dog's attention for various training exercises, so it's a good idea to get the dog comfortable with the leash early on.

These tips are intended mainly for new puppy owners, but if you have an older dog who has never gotten used to the leash you can also go through this process. Simply start by attaching the leash to the dog's collar and allowing him to wander around an open space. Once he has had a chance to experience the feel of the leash dragging behind him, pick it up and start using it to guide him around. Just walk wherever you want, changing directions as you please. Give him a gentle tug if he doesn't initially want to follow. The idea his is to get him used to the idea that when he's on the leash, he's following your lead.

If he refuses to follow when you tug gently or he insists on trying to chew the leash, don't worry – we'll cover these issues in Chapter 4 about Problem Behaviors.
