The "In Your Crate" Command

What we’re trying to achieve here is getting the dog to go inside the crate whenever we tell her to. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Put the full food bowl in the crate and say, “In your crate.”

  2. Say “good dog” when she enters the crate. While she eats leave the crate door open for starters (this is important – if you try to close it you can end up scaring her).

  3. Repeat this for several days until she’s comfortable eating in the crate. Then, start closing the door while she eats. (Refer to Chapter 5 for a more detailed explanation of the crate training procedure.)

  4. To add extra practice, you can also simply throw a treat into the crate and say “In your crate.” Remember to use your marker word and praise her when she goes inside.

This process applies to various other places you might want your dog to go. It could be “On your bed,” or “In you kennel.” Just repeat the process, feeding her there or throwing a treat there and applying the command as you did in the process for “In your crate” above.

Dog Quote of the Week

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.
