"Forgotten" Housetraining and How to Deal With It

Sometimes a dog will simply forget her training – it does happen. With housetraining, this is particularly true for adolescent dogs. Dogs go through adolescence some time between 4 and 12 moths of age, depending on the dog. During this time, body changes and development can lead to a housetraining regression.

The solution here is pretty simple. Go through the housetraining process again. It can be useful to make use of a crate this time around, if you didn't the first time. Crate training is covered in detail in Chapter 5.

When you're around home, there's another way to speed up housetraining and avoid accidents. Simply tie the dog to you by attaching the leash to your belt. This way you can keep an eye on her and take her outside before you end up with a mess on the carpet.

"I've seen a look in dogs’ eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts."
