Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Jennifer

This is a photo I took of our sweet Maggie Mae in our hometown of Walnut Creek, California. She's such a good girl, loves running free in the foothills with her best friend and dad, Aaron. Loves a good belly rub, playing fetch, and snuggling.

Stopping Fear Aggression Cont'd

Let’s use the fear of strangers as an example. This advice applies to any fear your dog may have.

  1. Make sure you do this with plenty of room to move – your back yard is best. Your dog should be on leash.

  2. Either have a friend come over who your dog has never met, or get a family member to dress up in unusual clothes and wear perfume or deodorant so the dog won’t recognize them. Have them approach slowly from a distance.

  3. Wait until your dog gives the person her attention, but isn’t yet aggressive.

  4. Get down close to your dog and offer her treats. Stroke her and talk to her reassuringly.

  5. If the dog stays calm, let the other person move closer. You want them to get as close as possible, but you want to stop before the dog gets aggressive. Pay attention to her body language – when you see she’s getting close to going aggressive, tell the other person to back away.

It’s important to try to stay within your dog’s comfort zone. As you practice this exercise over several weeks, that comfort zone will start to expand. Eventually you’ll be able to work up to the point where she’ll be comfortable having strangers come up and pet her. Essentially what you’re doing is creating a positive association to meeting strangers by reassuring her and providing treats.
