Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Owner: Christine Elisabeth Berczes, Photo: Kitty Kilian

Our dog is a Hungarian breed Silver Dream Aussie's Baltic, but we just call hím Jack. :) He is just a 2 years old blue merle boy who is Hungary Junior Champion and got Excellent 3rd Place in Intermediate class of the World Dog Show 2013. At home in our village Hollókő (Ravenstone) in north Hungary, he is the cutey, lovely boy whose best friend is Pluto the Magyar Vizsla, with whom they love to chase and herd our 10 mini rabbits and a cat called Dumpling.

Tricks—Spin

The Spin move is a good one to show off to friends and family. Most dogs pick this up pretty quickly. It’s similar to Roll Over in some ways.

1. With your dog in a standing position, take a treat or target stick and lure her to start turning her attention to the right.

2. When she turns to the right, click and reward her.

3. Once she can do this consistently, start extending the turn distance. Make her turn so that she’s facing the complete opposite direction from when she started. When she turns around, click and give her a treat.

4. Once she has mastered that move, extend the spin so she must turn in a full circle, back to the starting position, before she gets her reward. When she does a full spin, click and give her a treat.

Like Roll Over, this technique is best taught in several parts. You can try to lure her into a full spin right from the start, but some dogs will just get confused. If your dog can do the full spin right from the get-go – just click and reward, and keep practicing that. The broken down steps should be used if she doesn’t get it straight away.
