Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Kelly J. Corl

Kaylee is a 9 year old red tri Aussie who was adopted from Centre Co PAWS in the fall of 2011. She loves to participate in agility classes. In this picture, her wet paws made such distinct impressions on the deck. That, coupled with her smile, makes this my favorite picture of my girl!

Flyball

Flyball is an exciting sport and makes an excellent challenge for clever Aussies, but it requires a pretty advanced level of training to get started. It's essentially a race between several dogs, but there's a bit of a twist. Your dog will race along the course, jumping a series of hurdles on the way. At the end of the course she has to stand on a pad which launches a ball into the air (hence the name of the sport). The dog then has to catch the ball, turn around and run back to you over the hurdles.

As you can see, there are a few skills your dog needs to nail in order to compete. One is being able to catch a ball in the air consistently. The hardest part for most dogs is learning to stand on the pad to launch the disc – this can be done using a target stick to guide the dog to stand in a particular place.
