Fleas, Worms and Other Parasites — Mites

There are a few mites that affect dogs. The two most common are known as mange and scabies. The signs to look out for include itching, sore spots and skin irritation. (Many people think mange and scabies are simply skin diseases – they're in fact symptoms of mite infestation, so you need to treat the mites in order to treat the symptoms). Mange is particularly common in puppies and results in hair loss and red patches on the skin.

Treatment for mites usually comes in the form of medication. You need to consult your vet on what's best, especially if your dog is still a puppy. You should always avoid giving your dog any medication which you have not discussed with your vet, but this is particularly true for pups who are relatively susceptible to a variety of diseases.

Dog Quote of the Week

"A dog doesn't care if you're tired or it's raining. It wants to go out - and if it doesn't go out, it's going to be mournfully following you around the house for the whole evening."

~ Mark Barrowcliffe
