Australian Shepherd Activity

by Lola

I love Australian Shepherds, and I was thinking about getting them. But I always hear about how active they are, and it makes me curious. How many walks do you think they should take each day? This is assuming I also have a fenced in backyard they can get into.

An hour a day... at least
by: Rob

Unexercised Aussies can be destructive dogs. They make stuff up to do to keep themselves busy.

Our two need at least an hour a day of play and exercise with plenty of mental activity to boot. Often more, and supplemented with some extra play in the evenings. When we get an hour in the morning and an hour after work, they sleep the rest of the evening. Otherwise they are velcro dogs looking to us to entertain them and we'll roughhouse a little to take the edge off any restlessness.

My Aussies require a minimum of a 5 mile bike ride AND a hour walk a day to be content.
Then doggie puzzles for special days.
