Can I Thin The Coat?

I've adopted a 1 1/2 year old male mini? (weighs 15 # with all this hair). I did a grooming with under coat rake, pin brush, and slicker brush and trimmed feet and toenails. But he has so much more hair, he's a puff ball! I used to board a kennel dog that the owners shaved every
year for summer but I've heard you shouldn't shave an Aussie.

With Jack Russells we used to thin the coat or strip it...

Shaving?
by: Nonnie

Please don't shave your Aussie!!! My daughter is a groomer and a vet tech. Shaving an Aussie will ruin his coat. They need the double layer to protect them ... from the sun in the summer and from the cold in the winter.

I too have a half mini/half full Aussie and have been shaving him every summer for three years. He seems to like it and his coat comes back each fall looking as good if not better than the year before. I guess it may depend on the dog but, it works for me and Jasper.

Try a Furminator.

My aussie also is a fluff ball. I just brush her alot to get the dead hair removed. She is an outside dog so I am afraid to clip her for fear that her hair won't grow back. I have always heard that you do not shave them and if you find a groomer that will... they are not true to their job.
