Dog Age And Training

We have 2 Austrailian Shepherds. How old is too old to try and train them? Our female is 5 years old and our male is 2 1/2 years old. My daughter took the female to the 4-H Dog Obedience and the dog seemed to get stubborn. In the practices, she did fine. The dog kept looking for me instead of her. Can we fix this? Are either of them trainable for her or do we need to get her a puppy and start from scratch?
