Extremely Territorial Aussie!

I need someone's help! We rescued a 4-year-old Aussie from our Humane Society in April. She has come miles and miles with us but I have a concern. She is very territorial with a few areas of the house. If anyone (besides us) heads down our hall when she's there, she will bark and growl and has bitten my mother-in-law. Also, if she is in my husband's lap and someone reaches toward him, she'll do the same thing. It's very frustrating because she is ordinarily such a sweet and friendly dog. Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks!
