Heartworm Prevention

I have a 2 year old female. I have always given her Interceptor for heartworm prevention. Now, Interceptor, is no longer available. I have been told not to give her Heartguard. The vet
has recommended Tri? What are other Aussie owners giving their dogs? I need advice. Please help!

I give my girl who is 3.5 years Heartguard Plus with no problems.

Yes, you can use Trifexis although it is quite a bit more expensive. You can also opt to have the MDR1 test to see if your dog has drug sensitivities. If he is normal, you can use heartgard. The test is about $70.

Sorry I forgot to say that the test is available from the University of Washington.

Trifexis has the same heartworm medication (milbemycin oxime) as Interceptor. But it also has spinosad in it for killing fleas. My vet recommends Trifexis as the next best thing to Interceptor. She uses it now for her own dogs.

I ran the MDR1 test on my Mini before I had her spayed. She is negative, but we still elected to use Trifexis. It works great & I love not having to deal with fleas...
