Jobs For Australian Shepherds?

by Zach Schafer
(Colorado, USA)

I am getting two Aussies in a couple weeks, but I was just wondering what types of jobs, other than search and rescue and herding, I could have my pups do. I'm up for anything and have a huge yard so if you have any ideas that would be great.

Aussies will do pretty much anything that you want them to do. Tricks training is cool. You can set up agility in your yard. Obedience, rally, frisbee, therapy work are all things that mine do. Be creative. We like "101 things to do with a box". Bryn will bring the box out when she wants to play and sometimes will just play on her own.

My aussie digs and kills moles. She is better than any gismo you can buy. She also loves to catch balls - she jumps very high to get them once they bounce off the ground. She also patrols the perimeter of the property. She is a great guard dog. It's great that you are getting two.

Zach,
First off be aware that if you get 2 aussies at the same time..they may bond more with each other than you.
With that said, Aussies can pretty much do anything you ask them too. There is Agility,

there is also Fly Ball

Definetly take them to some Basic Obedience Classes.
Go to a dog park and just have fun with your aussie....or take them to a lake or pond to swim.
My aussies love that.
Be creative and just have fun!
