My Aussie Is Aggressive On Leash

by Luanne
(Winthrop Harbor, Ill)

What can I do to stop his aggression toward other dogs while on leash? He seems to think he has the job of protecting me. He is fine at dog parks when loose.
THANKS, Luanne

Agressive on leash
by: Marilyn

I have the same problem with my two year old. I think I am seeing a little change, but it is a constant battle. From what I read in the comments of other owners, this seems to be a very common problem. Wish I could give you the magic cure, but I am still searching myself. Good luck!

Get in a Dog training class group
by: Skadams9038

Hi. It's been my experience over the last 30 years, that if you get a dog use to being around other dogs who are in a group...that are not known to them, you can have this experience. The more often it happens and you correct the problem the more the dog is going to learn not to perform this behavior, because it is not acceptable.

You need to get the dog to focus on what you want it to behave like...not so much what it wants to behave like.

Once you correct and get the dog's attention...continue practicing this behavior until you have no problems.

Sometimes training for correction is as much for you as it is for the dog.

Remember...Practice makes perfect...can lead to good (correct) behavior. If this doesn't work seek help ... or a behavior group for you to practice with.

Dog Aggression
by: Tricia

I rescued a mix Aussie who we think is about 1 year old. She is fantastic one on one but walking her in my neighborhood is a huge chore due to her aggression toward any other dog (and boy are there alot of dogs in my neighborhood). It has been 3 months and I think the only improvement that has been made is because I have gradually changed to stronger collars (prong).

Aggression

I also have this problem, my Aussie mix is a 4 yr old male, he is a wonderful dog, and even on approach to another dog he can be fine, but when its time to walk away from the other dog, he growls and shows he is the alpha. I have been working consistently with him using a gentle leader and a slip leash. I walk him mostly using the slip leash and if another dog approaches I us the gentle leader to have more control of him, I keep him very close to me and repeat leave it, leave it. I do see slow improvement. Hope this helps in some way.
