Nipping and Biting While on Walks

by Joe
(Savannah)

My Aussie is about 8 months old and he used to play wonderfully with other dogs and while hyper was quite loving with other people, but, as of late, he has snapped at folks on the trail and even broke skin on one man's arm. He also jumped once on another dog which has never happened. We have done puppy training are just wondering what we can do stop this. It's embarrassing, but worse, uncomfortable for other people and dogs. He does not bite those he is familiar with.

If he is jumping up and making contact with other people and dogs, and you are unable to control him or keep him close enough to avoid it, then he needs to be muzzled anytime he is in that situation until the behavior is resolved. If he were to injure a person or their dog and they sought medical care your dog would likely be labelled an aggressive dog. Find a positive trainer experienced in barrier aggression or whatever it ends up being, and be honest with them that he has bit and made contact with people. Legally, a nip is a bite, so underplaying it to the trainer wont help you or your dog.
