Salt Water And Australian Shepherds

by Catherine Sheehan
(Owls Head Maine)

After walking in the Bay, my Aussie seems to have problems or an irritation somewhere on his paws. I can see nothing at all. Could it be the salt water that is causing an irritation? Should I rinse his paws every time he takes a dip or runs through the water?

Ours swims in salt water almost daily

Our beloved Aussie seems to be fine with the salt water and it is difficult to keep him out of it until winter! That doesn't mean yours isn't sensitive to the salt.

rinse

Just my opinion - rinse every time any dog goes into a lake, pond, ocean. Maybe I'm cautious because I live in Florida and we have the potential for unpleasant microorganisms in the water, but still I think it's a good idea for people and dogs to at least rinse off.
