Training Tips For Our New Rescue Pup

We adopted our Aussie from the humane society just shy of a week ago. He was rescued from a hoarder house along with 56 other pups. His paperwork says he's 5 months old, but he is tiny! I think he is either a mini or they have his age wrong. I'm working on potty training right now and my question is do I get that established before we move on to tricks /commands or should I be teaching him that at the same time. And what are your tips on training/teaching tricks?
