Taddles

Taddles

My name is Trish and I was given an Australian Shepherd a few years ago from my mom and her boyfriend at the time. She was only about 6 months old when they gave her to my boyfriend and I and they gave her to us because they just didn't have the energy to keep up with her. Things were great at first, but then we had our daughter and Taddles was no longer getting the attention that she was used to and that she needed.

We recently had to take her to the vet because she was constantly scratching herself and making herself bleed from it, even though she was on flea meds and is flea-free. The veterinarian said it was skin allergies and that she gave herself a secondary infection from getting dirt in the open wounds. We payed about $200 for her to get seen and to get antibiotics, steroids, medicated shampoo, and a medicated leave-in rinse. She had to keep an e-collar on to prevent her from scratching more and we were told to bathe her every 7-14 days. I have been bathing her every 7-8 days and it doesn't seem to help. She has been living in her cone (e-collar) for almost 2 months now because every time we take it off, she immediately goes to scratching and gnawing on herself. She has now chewed a hole through her cone to scratch, and she now has new wounds all over her bottom-area.

I honestly just don't know what to do for her anymore, I have kept up with everything the vet has told me to do, and I even started getting her a better dog food because I was told it would help. Nothing is helping and I feel horrible, but I can just no longer afford to take care of her and I don't know what to do to keep her from hurting herself. I really hope that someone who knows how to deal with something like this can and will adopt her.

She is a very loving dog when she's healthy. She's great with kids, will take them beating up on her and not do anything. She gets along with other dogs, she just has to have her own food bowl. She has never bitten anybody. She is very excitable and she has a slight problem with jumping on people when she first sees them. She's completely house-trained and will let you know when she needs out. She is already past chewing stuff up, she only did it when she was a puppy.

As far as obedience training goes, she knows how to sit, lay down, and stay. She really deserves a loving family, someone who has lots of energy and time to play with her.

If you would like to contact me about her, my email address is trishgleason91@gmail.com I really appreciate it and if anyone has any questions please contact me. I seriously hope I can find a good home for her. Thank you so much for giving her a chance by reading this.

allergies

I give my border collie 1-2 Zyrtec a day during grass season and feed her Taste of the Wild dog (tractor supply - pretty cheap and an excellent food) food for the same allergy patterns. She has chicken, grass, and tree allergies. Zyrtec Works great and doesn't make her as sleepy as the benadryl.

Thank you all so much!

Thanks to everybody that has commented! I have been trying all kinds of things, and I think we might finally have it under control. We have her on a different dog food because she is allergic to red dye & the food she was on had red dye in it. I also think a lot of her problem is that it gets so hot here in the summer. It seems to only act up in the summer, so I think the heat has something to do with it as well. We are going to try to shave her this year and see if that helps any. The way things are going, we are really trying to keep her, so as long as we keep all of her skin issues under control I think we will keep her. Again, thank you to everybody who commented with tips and advice, it really helps & means a lot to me!

Hi I adopted an Aussie who came with a whole set of skin issues. Our vet used a series of lime sulfer dips (4 of them) and it helped some. However the real solution was when we followed up with Revolution instead of the other products that they use for flea tick etc. This worked on whatever microbes were in his skin since it is a broad spectrum treatment. We also went over to a dog food that was grain free because there is also an allergic base to it. I used Taste of the Wild. Wheat and soy sometimes are allergenic to dogs. For awhile we used a lamb and rice based dog food and he did better with that. So this combination of approaches really worked for us. I am sorry for you and Taddles that you are going through this. It doesn't seem to be fleas or ticks but other microbes and possibly some allergy involved as well. Good luck. Some vet will have the answer.

A Little help with the scratching
by: Anonymous

My Aussie, now passed, also had this problem, and I spent a lot of money like you did, but found a very simple and cheap way to fix it (buy a stalk of aloe vera from the grocer and drain some of the pure aloe vera on her places that she scratches and place a bandage over it and three days later, the itching will be done with. My dog, Cindy, lived to be over 16 years and she was THE most gorgeous and patient girl ever. I have two Aussie pups now, and wish I had read your letter earlier.

try these ideas as well
by: Anonymous

we always dry our dogs feet, and belly with towels before coming on to the house, that has reduced their feet biting tremendously. also, if possible, try going out once the grass outside has dried(not as wet romt eh morning dew). I realize, that's not always possible, but if you can, that may help as well to reduce, and try not to walk him where pesticides have been sprayed. My vet told me, that even if its been 24 hours or more, when the grass is wet, it reactivates any chemicals that are on the grass.
hope this helps.

Ask your vet if she might be allergic to grass. We have a 10 year old teacup poodle who has always chewed on her front feet. She has done it for a long time, but none of the vets we have seen had any solutions.

About three years ago our vets office hired another vet for their practice. He has been absolutely wonderful. We have been through four very serious situations with him and he is awesome. We now only take our dogs to see him.

When we asked him about her chewing on her feet, he thought she might have an allergy to grass. He told us to try washing of her paws when she comes in from outside and to give her 1/2 of the childrens' dose of Benadryl 2-3 times a day. It has to be the Benadryl that has only Benadryl and no other ingredients.

Check with your vet before you do anything! The dose we give is for a 4 1/2 lb, 10 year old teacup poodle. I am sure it would be different for an Aussie.

I hope you decide to keep her. Aussies are the best dogs in the world.
