USA, Georgia, 9-Year-Old, Kat

by Kim Gomes
(Atlanta, GA)

Kat is a nine-year-old spayed female purebred red merle Australian Shepherd in suburban Atlanta, Georgia. We got as a six-week-old puppy from a horse farm in Buford, Georgia. She is housebroken, up-to-date on shots, obedient, intelligent, sweet and affectionate. Kat is eager to please and just wants you to love her. Since she's a little older now, we currently exercise her by taking her on a daily mile-and-a-half walk for 30-45 minutes. We've never had a fenced-in yard, but she's all business when she needs to go outside to do her thing and is good off leash. She has always been great around adults – she especially loves women – and adapts quickly to new faces – mostly by trying to get them to pet her.

Unfortunately, Kat has issues with small children and other dogs. She was fine around our two boys (currently five and two) when they were infants, but now that they're mobile, she does tend to get weirded out by them. As a result, we have always tried to make sure she was never with the boys alone and unsupervised, and we taught them both not to approach her without us around, corner her or tease her. Despite this, she recently bit our five-year-old in the face. It wasn't that serious, but it's the last straw. About two years ago, right after our youngest was born, she bit off part of her dog brother's ear; he is the most submissive pug on the planet, so no one knows what prompted it. It breaks our hearts to have to get rid of her, but we just can't take the chance that something worse might happen with one of the boys.

Due to these circumstances, we need to give her up but dread sending her to a shelter because of her age and dog/little kid issues. Kat would make a great pet for a family with no dogs or kids, or with teenagers. She'd also make a great pet for a single guy or gal; she is not afraid to bark and makes a great house alarm.
