Which Medication Is Safe For Heartworm?

by Janis
(Massachusetts)

I gave my dog 1 dose of Trifexis at the recommendation of a vet. He had no problems thank god. That was 2 weeks ago. After reading these comments as well as other sites, I'm returning the rest. I have a 1 y/o Aussie/Border mix, tri color, merle, blue eyed, white feet, handsome looking boy. Ive also read to STAY AWAY from the "Mectin" family, which means Heart Guard as that too causes seizures and death in the Herding family. So WTH do I use for Heart Worm? I live in a highly mosquito infected area. Please help! I don't want to kill my dog with medication and/or not protecting him from heart worm. I feel like there are no answers.

Hi, I also read the same reports and have 3 hearing dogs so I returned the Heart Guard and bought INTERSEPTOR. I hope this helps. Lori

You can have your dog tested for drug sensitivities with the MDR1 test. It is offered by the University of Washington veterinary school. The test is not cheap-- $70, but you would then know if it is safe to give your dog Heartgard which is much less expensive than your other choices. There are companies in Canada that still carry Interceptor. You can check on the intenet for the University of Washington and companies in Canada.
