A Few Words on Positive Training

This book emphasizes positive dog training techniques. Like "pack leader," "positive training" is a term you hear kicked around a lot on TV these days. Again, it's an often misunderstood idea.

We're not going to get too technical on official dog training lingo here, because this is meant to be a simple, easy-to-understand guide. So I'll give you a quick breakdown of what positive training is, for the purposes of this book:

Positive training is shaping your dogs behavior by rewarding good behavior, instead of punishing bad behavior.

That's it. In the past, many top dog trainers recommended methods based heavily on punishing the dog every time it misbehaved. However, this is not the most effective style of training – it can cause your dog to develop fear problems (which is a big cause of aggression) and it often just doesn't produce the results you were looking for.

So keep this in mind as you read this book: the techniques here are about capturing and rewarding good behaviors, so we get more of them. We'll be trying to stop problem behaviors by encouraging good behaviors to replace them.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
