Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Derek Hung

Pyro is a 2 months old black tri male puppy with one blue eye. It was his very first time to go outside with pictures. Both of his parents are from the United States, and they are all loved and cared by me and my family in Taiwan. Australian Shepherds are my favorite breed, they are the best!

Eyes Front: Getting Attention

This is a simple way to get your dog to give you attention whenever you want to give a command. Remember, no matter how well trained your dog is, if you can't get him to pay attention in every situation, he won't even hear what you're saying. If he's focused on chasing a squirrel or rabbit, he will completely tune you out. Likewise, if he's not looking at you he can't pick up hand cues. So you need to be able to get him to look at you on command.

You can use a command here, such as "look at me," but it works just as well to do this exercise with your dog's name.

  1. Get a bag of treats ready, or your dog's favorite toy.

  2. Hold the treat in front of your face, between your eyes.

  3. Say your dog's name.

  4. When she makes eye contact, say your marker word and give her the treat immediately. Remember to give verbal praise as well and pet her.

  5. Repeat until she looks at you consistently.
