Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

|
Kelsey Terryah |
This is Sadie, she is 3 years old (at time of this photo), and my first experience owning a deaf dog. She is content hanging out in the yard playing with either a frisbee or tennis ball for several hours. Sadie is a bit of a weirdo, she is fascinated by bright lights or prisms shining on the walls or floor. She stares at them and turns her head back and forth before pouncing on them and making ear piercing barks. She is extremely intelligent and learns new hand signals very quickly. She's very eager to please.

Training and Care — Tip Of The Week

Australian Shepherd Lover's Guide To Australian Shepherd Training & Care
Excerpt #26
The Training Environment
This is the last thing we'll be touching on in this chapter, but it's certainly not the least important. The environment in which you train your dog can have a big effect on the results you get.
When I say environment, I'm referring to a whole bunch of things:
-
Inside or outside
-
Other animals around
-
People around
-
Distracting noises
-
Food nearby
All these things are competing with you for your dog's attention. You want to start training a new command in a completely distraction-free environment. When your dog starts to understand the command and can do it consistently, start introducing distractions on purpose. This is necessary to make sure your dog will obey when you're in a real-life situation with lots of distractions, like a dog park.

If you get to thinking you're a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else's dog around.
