Nikki is a sweet and very mellow 3 year old Aussie who loves to cuddle. She loves going to dog parks and getting as many dogs as she can to chase her. She loves the outdoors but at home her favorite toy to play with is a large squeaky ball.

Leave It, Drop It and Give

To wrap up this chapter we’re going to cover three very useful commands that help us deal with a dog who can’t stop picking up objects and chewing them or running away with them. This is especially useful for puppies when they’re going through the “chew absolutely everything in sight” stage of development.

The names of these commands should give you a pretty clear idea of what they’re used for. Let’s get into how you can teach them to your Aussie.

Leave It

If you went through the process for teaching “No” earlier on, you pretty much already know how to teach this command. The process is essentially the same.

  1. Put a desirable item that you don’t want your dog to touch on the floor, like one of your favorite shoes.

  2. Put your dog on leash.

  3. Let her wander over to the shoe, but when she goes to sniff it, say “Leave it” in a firm, clear voice.

  4. As soon as she stops sniffing and gives her attention back to you, say your marker word and give a treat. If she tries to pick the object up in her mouth, gently tug her away from it with the leash. Don’t reward her if she tries to pick it up – start again from step 1, and repeat until she stops trying to pick it up and turns her attention back to you after you say “Leave it.”

Next time: The "Drop It" Command

Dog Quote of the Week

I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that.
