Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Rob Brazeau

With summer approaching our male blue merle Jack (10 months in picture) will be looking forward to getting back to his favorite pastime — swimming in the lake. Jack is from Ontario, Canada, so there is no swimming here in the winter and this time of year (March) unless we want a wet dog we need to stay away from water or he heads straight for it.

The “Off” Command

This handy command can be used to stop your dog from jumping up. To teach it, you’ll need to keep some treats on you at all times for a while.

  1. Wait for your dog to try to jump up on you.

  2. Hold your hand out in a “Stop” gesture (but don’t actually say the word) and then say the word “Off” in a commanding tone. When all four of her paws touch the ground again, immediately say your marker word and feed a treat.

  3. To make it quicker to teach this, kneel down to meet her and hold the treat on the floor. This will get her down faster.

Remember, you’re using the word “Off” here – you’re using the word “Down” for a slightly different command. If you mix the two up, you’re being inconsistent and will end up confusing the dog.
