Helping Your Dog Relax

As we’ve already discussed, Aussies are a particularly energetic breed. This is completely in keeping with their history as working dogs.

But as a result, many owners find their Aussies getting too excited too easily. The end result is hyperactivity.

There are a few things you can do to deal with this issue. For starters: exercise. It’s your best friend when it comes to stopping all problem behaviors, not just this one. If your dog is running around too much and never seems to run out of energy, you’re not giving her enough exercise. That’s it.

Increase the lengths of your walks, or walk at a faster pace. Alternatively use some of the other higher intensity exercise ideas from Chapter 7.

Now, increasing exercise will help reduce your dog’s overall excitement levels throughout the day – but what if you need a technique to calm your dog down on the spot? The solution here is dog massage. It might sound a little crazy at first, but petting your dog the right way can be a huge help in calming her down.

Dog Quote of the Week

Dogs who chase cars evidently see them as large, unruly ungulates badly in need of discipline and shepherding.
