Australian Shepherd Photo of the Week

Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Eric Giesbrecht

This is Penny our female Aussie at 1 1/2 years old. We were camping on Revelstoke Lake on the Columbia River Chain in BC, Canada. When on a morning hike down the lake Penny decided to have a swim and climb up on a partially submerged log. It was a great trip and Penny and everyone had a great time.

Petting for Relaxation

Here are two methods for petting your dog to help calm her down when she’s wound up or very excited.

  1. Place your hands on both sides of the dog’s face so your thumbs rest on her cheeks, just below the eyes. Slowly rotate your thumbs around in a circular motion, while at the same time your use your fingertips to massage the back of her head.

  2. Pet your dog slowly along the top of the head, from front to back. Use both hands, one after the other, in a smooth motion.

These provide you with ideas – pay attention to what your dog likes. If scratches under the chin calm her down more than these techniques, then do that instead. Also, try talking to your dog in a quiet, soothing tone as you do this. The words may not make sense to her, but the tone of your voice can have a calming effect.

Dog Quote of the Week

A well-trained dog will make no attempt to share your lunch. He will just make you feel so guilty that you cannot enjoy it.
