Australian Shepherd Dog Photo of the Day

Piper Gammons

I'm Piper Gammons, and I took this photo of my dog Rex. We are currently living in Beijing, China, where my dad has been working for the past few years. Rex is a male who is just turned 11 years old in June (2012). Rex means so much to my family and I. We are so thankful to have Rex, because he is such a sweet dog. It makes us so happy to take him out to throw the Frisbee, which is his favorite thing to do! He also loves curling up in the bed next to me.

Excessive Barking

Too much barking is another problem behavior that can cause stress both for you as an owner, and for the people who have to live within earshot of your dog.

First of all, bear in mind that barking is a completely natural behavior and is a form of communication for dogs. In the same way body language communicates what a dog is thinking and feeling, you can get an idea of what’s going on in your dog’s head from barks. And, just like with toileting problems, you have to figure out what is causing the barking if you want to decrease or stop it. There are different approaches for different types of barking.

Here are a handful of things barking can mean:

  • The dog wants to play

  • The dog is bored

  • The dog is afraid

  • The dog has separation anxiety and is trying to get a response from you

  • The dog is frustrated

  • Puppies bark to test out their vocal cords

  • Old dogs who are becoming senile may bark without any apparent reason

  • Communicating with another dog

Let’s look at each of these one by one and discuss the best ways to deal with them.
