Puppy Exercise

Some owners get a bit too excited about walking a puppy and start doing it straight away. As I already mentioned, it’s dangerous to take your puppy out into the world before she has all her vaccinations. But on top of that, young pups just don’t need exercise – they get enough just running around on their own, and they’ll sleep most of the time anyway. They have a lot of growing to do.

You don’t really need to start taking your pup for proper walks until she’s 5 months old. Remember that up until 6 months of age, pup’s bodies are still developing and they have soft knees, so don’t push her too hard before then. For a 6 month old puppy a 20-minute walk should be plenty. But of course, you’ll need to make up your mind on this based on your dog’s energy levels. Increase the walking time as she gets older. By the time she’s a year old, you should be walking her for at least an hour a day.

Dog Quote of the Week

"Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."
