Types of Exercise
If you think exercise just means taking your dog for a walk, you can think again. There are a few other avenues open to you. Walking is great and you should include it in your daily routine unless it's totally impossible. But these other forms of exercise can be a great addition to a daily walk.
Remember what we said at the start of this book about the Aussie being a working dog? They were bred to run around all day on ranches herding animals. So, they're built to run. That means you should try to give your dog plenty of opportunities to run in open spaces, off leash.
Now, of course, you want to be safe about this. Don't go letting your dog off leash near a high-traffic road if you can't recall her consistently. Work on the Come command and be careful about where you let her off leash.
Dog parks are great for free running, but again, you need to lay a basic obedience foundation before you go to one. You don't want your dog to go getting in a fight the moment you take her off the leash. See how she reacts to other dogs at the park before you let her off to run around on her own.
