Training Your Dog to Catch

You might find your dog is happy to fetch a Frisbee or ball, but she can't catch it while it's in flight. Not to worry – there's a simple method for teaching this. The following method works whether you're using a Frisbee, tennis ball or other toy.

1. Get your dog motivated to be involved in the game by waving the Frisbee around and acting excited.

2. You want to encourage her to jump up and try to grab the Frisbee. If she doesn't, hold it lower and let her grab it in her mouth.

3. When she grabs it, immediately say your marker word and let it go (getting the Frisbee is her reward in this case).

4. Get the Frisbee back using the "Give" command.

5. Once you've done this a few times, start throwing the Frisbee to her from a distance of just a few feet. If she gets the idea and catches it, you've succeeded already.

6. If she doesn't catch it, there's another step you can use: roll it along the ground to her. When she picks it up, call her back to you and repeat. Once she gets the hang of this, start throwing it in the air again.
