Australian Shepherd Question & Answer
Can my Aussie keep up with me and not be over exhausted on a 3-4 mile run at an 8 minute mile pace?
If you are riding a bike or running at a pace of about eight minutes a mile your Australian Shepherd should have no trouble keeping up with you. Aussies love to run and can go for considerable distances.
However, there are some things to keep in mind. First, you will want to build your Aussie up to longer distances. Work your way up to 3 or 4 miles (or more) but be sure that your dog is able to handle it. Mature Aussies can handle long hikes and runs of even 10 miles or more.
Keep an eye on your Aussie to make sure they are not struggling or in need of water. It will be important to keep them hydrated. If they slow down, back off on your pace or stop for a while.
You will also want to keep the surface in mind. You will have to adjust your pace if you are on concrete, asphalt, or rocks, for example. Even when on grass you will have to consider uneven terrain or other hazards.
Bear in mind that puppies cannot handle hard surfaces and will have limited endurance. Puppies should not be run on hard surfaces or for extended periods until their growth plates come together. Check with your vet about this as serious hip and joint problems can develop as a result.
