"Oh the Power of Dreams"

Have you ever had a particularly vivid dream and had it turn into a reality? What a joy! It certainly was for me when one sunny afternoon in Oak Ridge North, Texas, I plopped down for an afternoon snooze and awoke with a novel. Not just any novel, but a highly acclaimed best selling story about a remarkable Australian Shepherd named Bandit. I know this sounds a little far-fetched, but you see, after forty years in movies, television and radio I have a pretty flamboyant imagination. The story of Bandit and Sheena played on the screen behind my eyelids so factually, I immediately jumped up, ran downstairs and shouted at my wife, Cathy, "please listen to me tell you this story." She did and recommended that I go without delay to write the premise down. The dream became the best selling novel, "Down from the Mountain". Let me hasten to add, none of this would have been possible without some wonderful folks whose names read like the whose-who of Australian Shepherds. Judie Manuel started this all off and through her I met Anne Shope, Barbara Moe, Jean-Joy Hartnagle Taylor and Shelly Hollen-Wood. All of these folks contributed to the authenticity of the book and the color of the wonderful world of sheep and ranchers. Set in the beautiful southwest corner of Montana, the scenery and action of this book captured a vast number of fans. After the publishing came the request for a sequel. I tried and tried to come up with a suitable topic that would again showcase the Aussie's indomitable spirit, faithfulness, courage and the comic side of this breed that keeps all of us laughing and talking. Then one day, I came across a news article about how dogs were enabling returning veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome as well as those returning with a loss of limbs, sight and /or various and other maladies. Their recovery has been greatly helped by the use and devotion of these dogs. Our Aussie, Falen, is a service dog for our autistic grandson so we are well aware of the ability of an Aussie to impact lives.

In re-reading the last chapters of "Down from the Mountain" I remembered the character Rick Gonzales, the son of Sergio and Isabelle, who were friends and neighbors of Javier and Bandit. Rick's devotion to Falen, Bandit's sister when he returned from Iraq an amputee, gave rise to the new book.

Well, this is where the new story begins. I hope you enjoy the first chapter of "Falen: Semper Fi." In following this wonderful newsletter you will be able to journey with Falen in subsequent chapters towards Rick's healing and his successful new life. I hope you enjoy.

~ Jim MacKrell

New Section on the Website to Show Off Your Aussie Art

Have you created paintings, drawings, cartoons or any kind of Aussie artwork? We'd love to check it out. I've gotten the ball rolling by posting a couple of my pieces. One is a cartoon and the other is a digital painting I did based on a photo. But right now they are very lonely and need you to post your masterpieces too. Be sure to tell us a bit about your piece too, like what medium you use and what we should know about your work.

My dog can bark like a Congressman, fetch like an aide, beg like a press secretary, and play dead like a receptionist when the phone rings.
