How Do You Handle Sudden Agression To Children?

We have a 7 month old Aussie Shepherd who we love however lately he will lay on his bed and growl or snap at our children's friends who have done nothing to encourage it. He also has a real problem with resource guarding. I have tried saying nothing and giving him a treat to release it which works most of the time but how do you get him to release without a treat?
