Aussie Attacking Other Dogs And My Fiancee

by Melissa
(Alabama)

We have had our Aussie for a little over three years now and he has never shown any kind of aggression at all towards anyone or anything. About a month ago my fiancee was walking him while I was at work and he randomly attacked a Maltese that was walking with her owner, he brought him home and put him up with our other dog who he then attacked, then after breaking up the fight and separating them he tried to attack my fiancee. We haven't had an incident since then until now. We have had our dogs separated since but today Kane, the Aussie, got out of his crate and attacked our Pit Bull. I don't know what to do. I really don't want to lose my dog.

Is your dog neutered?
I can already see from what you said that he does not view your fiancee as the Alpha Dog.
How old is he exactly? How many other intact (un neutered) dogs do you have I count 3. Is that correct?
Has something changed in his environment lately?
I have an idea of what else it might be , but e-mail me privately.

Have him checked out by a vet. Behavior that changes that radically that quickly could mean something is seriously wrong. It just doesn't sound like everything is ok.

Aussie Attacks

My 6 (almost 7) year old neutered male Aussie started attacking my 11 year old Aussie mix neutered male last summer. We found he had a slow thyroid and have him on meds. Things were fine for several months, but in the last week or so, he has started attacking not only the 11 year old but also my 17 month old neutered male Aussie. No provocation - no environmental changes that I can spot - just a sudden violent attack. Any ideas of what the trigger could be or what to do about it? He doesn't bother my 12 year old spayed female mixed breed. Thanks.

Did you ever find anything out? Mine is also 3 yrs old and I brought her up to my parents cabin with my poodle and there are 2 other poodle mixes there that she continues to attack.

No one in my family likes her and she seems like she's getting worse because everyone screams and creates a bigger scene.

we did find out that Toby (my 7 year old Aussie) has thyroid problems. He had hypothyroidism which we were treating with 7 mg thyro tabs (Synthroid) 2x daily. Last blood work showed hyperthyroidism so we cut the dose in half. He is now losing the hair on his chest again (like with the hypothyroidism) so I think the last blood work was incorrect. However, it seems when he feels poorly is when he attacks. We have at least figured that one out. Good Luck.

We have had Rocco since he was 8 weeks old. He has always been sweet and mild mannered, but when our older dog had cancer, he would attack her just walking out of the house for no reason, but she is a bigger dog and nothing happened and Rocco would fall in place. We have adopted my step daughter's dog that is a Chihuahua mix which is less than half his size. The previous attacks were minor, but this last Fourth of July, he hurt the Chihuahua pretty bad. Our kids are really upset over it. We hired a consultant to assess him, but she didn't think it was anything to be concerned about. We have 3 kids under the age of 6 and are concerned that he might attack one of the kids. For example, recently, the two dogs were playing fine outside and smaller dog bumped into a patio chair and it fell over, our Aussie, then started to attack the Chihuahua instantly over that incident. I don't understand why he would do that. If any of you guys have insights in this area and what would be triggering Rocco to behave this way, I would greatly appreciate it.

We love our Aussie, but want to be cautious as our kids are all under the age of 7 years old.

Thank you!
