Aussie Doodle Is Aggressive Towards My Grandson

by Kimberly
(Salem Oregon)

We have an 8-month-old Aussie Doodle and we are his second home. I asked the breeder many questions about his behavior and clearly, they were not honest.

He is good with adults in the home but terrible with my teen and 5 yr old grandson. He often walks by my grandson and nips, runs leaps and body slams and often just downright aggressive, snarling and biting leaving scratches. But most of the time he is quite tolerant of my grandson. The walks into a room and the dog attacks biting, barking and violently shaking his pants. Plus, Jack hates any and every one that comes for a visit.

Otherwise, Jack is a very good dog. He doesn't chew on my house, or furniture, he mostly does his potty business outside and can be quite affectionate.

Is this an Aussie thing? I just wonder because Jack seems to have mental problems to me.

I have even smaller grandchildren coming for Thanksgiving and I am very worried about his behavior. We can keep him in our bedroom, but if even a slightest slip up and he get out I am very worried what he could do.

Not sure if I can in good conscience rehome Jack knowing of his aggression and anxiety.

We have tried supplements for anxiety with little affect.

At 8 months, if he has not had any training, he is exhibiting out of control puppy behaviour. Nipping, herding (the bumping) play biting are all Aussie puppy traits. You need to get it under control now. I strongly recommend going to a good dog trainer for an evaluation and some training. In the meantime keep him on a leash around your son and grandson, he is not to interact with them, they should ignore him until he settles down near them. Good dogs are worth the effort!
