Australian Shepherd Breeding Defects Question About Testicles Not Dropping

Hank and Harlie

I bred my red merle Australian Shepherd to my red tri female. Her male puppy she had is now 5 months old and his testicles have not dropped.

I heard this is hereditary (my male has both of his). If this is hereditary, is it inherited from the male or female. I don’t want to breed them again if this will happen to the males in all her litters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to be a responsible breeder.

Testicles

Retained testicles is a hereditary problem. It is not a simple yes/no genetically like merle is; likely both parents contributed some faulty genes. If you rebreed the parents, you may or may not get more retained testicles, or a single retained testicle. I would certainly warn anyone who gets a pup of the potential, and the males' testicles should be dropped by 6-8 weeks. Retained testicles have a high likelihood of turning cancerous, so your pup should be neutered ASAP.
