Australian Shepherd Not Sleeping At Night

by Kyle
(Canada)

Hi there. I have an 8-month-old Australian Shepherd named Stormi. She's been great with sleeping in her crate through the night since day one. However this past week she will no longer sleep in it. She barks wildly when put in it at night.

We've tried to bring the crate upstairs to a spare room and sleep in it with her but she still just wildly barks. Even when we let her out of the crate in the room no difference.

The only way we are able to get any kind of sleep is to leave her out of the crate and sleep on the couch in the living room. Any tips on what to do?

We have cats that live in our room so trying to figure something out without kicking them out.

It sounds like your dog has begun adolescence and is exercising her independence. If it were me I wouldn’t move the crate. I would keep it where it’s been working until this point. I would ensure she has had a day including some good exercise before putting her to bed. Put her to bed as usual and if she barks, I would look at the clock to ensure you let her go a full 3 minutes. See if she stops on her own when she realizes barking doesn’t change anything. After three minutes I would put a light blanket over the crate and see if she settles. Don’t look at her and don’t say a thing. Just cover it and give her another minute to settle. I would start with this and adjust based on how it goes. Right now it sounds like the dog is telling you where she wants to be and how she wants it. You have to remain the gentle, firm alpha.
