Australian Shepherd With Irritated Anus Due To Diarrhea

by Fredda
(West Danville, Vt, USA)

My 6-year-old Australian Shepherd has had diarrhea all day and now his anus is raw and bleeding—more like spotty on the washcloth.

What should I do until I get him to the vet when they open?

Baking soda
by: Tammy

Not sure how big your Aussie is but a bath soak of baking soda and warm water will help. If that’s not possible then I would mix baking soda (just enough so that you can feel it coating your hand) with warm water, take a washcloth and saturate it in the water mixture and apply it to the anus. You want to soak the anus with the mixture. This will not only clean the area without more irritation it will coat the open sores and help them heal faster and feel better.
