Blowing Coat In The Winter?

by Weasel's Dad
(Tehachapi, CA)

Why is my Aussie loosing his fur when it is really cold outside. The weather turned colder in Oct. (down to 23 or so at night) and only getting up to 50's in the day. Seems like an odd time for him to shed his fur unless he is doing it to grow a new heavy coat for the colder months?

Did you ever find out why this was happening? My one-year-old female Aussie is blowing her coat too and it seems odd for this to have happened during very cold temps in mid December. She had a soft, thick coat and now her undercoat is almost all gone and she is left with just the top coat. The fur has been coming out in clumps. It was suggested to me that it might be due to a food allergy or sensitivity, so I have switched her from chicken to fish formulation food that is grain and gluten free. I'm hoping this makes a difference but it's still too early to tell. I would appreciate any insight you might have gained on this topic.

It’s frustrating there are no answers on here. One of my Aussies just did the same thing - undercoat coming out in clumps in November. She’s never shed in clumps like this before.
