Bringing Shepherd Along For A Ride In The Car

by Larry A.
(Ramsey, MN, USA)

We would like to get some training tips for our 3 year old male Aussie. He came from a rescue shelter and is very well trained. (He was a stray found in southern MN). We can't get him to jump into the car with us. He pulls back on the leash and shies away when he gets closer than 10 feet away from the car door. We have tried rewarding him with a treat, but it is not working. Any advice would be appreciated!

Open doors on both sides of the car -- one person with the dog and the other person with a really yummy treat. Have the person on the other side call him. The treat should be something that he doesn't normally get like cheese or real meat. You might have to practice on recalls before you try this. Keep everything upbeat.
