Crating New Australian Shepherd Puppy While Our Other Dog Is Not In Crate

by Kyle
(Canada)

Hi there. We have a 10-month-old Aussie/Collie cross who doesn't really sleep in a crate anymore. She's also started to be left out when we aren't home.

We're bringing home a new Aussie pup in a few days and was wondering if anyone had any tips on what to do with the new pup at night and when we are not home, as he will need to be in the crate.

Not sure how to go about this with one already not in the crate.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Either way works

I would encourage your older dog to continue using a crate and crate them both when out of the house. It can be very helpful at times or in emergencies for your dogs to be comfortable and happy in a crate.

But you could leave one crated and one not. I don’t see any issues with that.
