Do Aussies Need A Lightweight Jacket/Vest?

(Pennsylvania)

Hello, I recently moved up North to Pennsylvania where it's much colder than in the South! My pup is 10 months old, and doesn't have his thicker, coarser adult coat yet. This is my first time living somewhere which gets colder than 55 degrees during the winter and can have heavy snow.

Even though Australian Shepherds have a double coat, should I get him a thin, fleece lined jacket or lightly insulated jacket?

We go for 1-2 daily walks, and play lots of games outside every day. Are there certain temperature zones which are guidlelines to go off of for double coated dogs? I'm sure I'm being overprotective of my pup, but just want to give my best 4 legged friend what he needs.

Thanks!

Coat for Aussie
by: Anonymous

We live in Ontario just north of Lake Erie. Our winter temps can be around 5 to 14 degrees F. My Aussie does not wear a coat in winter and is quite comfortable on walks. If it is stormy I may put a raincoat on him but that is all he needs. What you might want to watch for though is slushy or icy conditions, especially if your town puts salt type ice melters down on sidewalks. It can be very painful for dogs if it gets into their foot pads.
Your pup will love his first snowfall!
