Dog Becomes Unglued When I Leave

by Jim Morgan
(Rockport, TX)

Our Australian Shepherd becomes unglued whenever I prepare to leave the house. He barks, spins around, and jumps against the door (once I am out).

We worry he is going to have a heart attack or something. My wife is the primary caregiver but he does not make any kind of fuss when she leaves the house. She says that once I am gone he is perfectly fine.

Also, he will start winding up when he hears me pick up my car keys.

Dog comes unglued
by: Dianne

From what I've discovered with our Festus, they're just raising a ruckus because they want to be included in what you're doing.
Festus is going on 13 and when we leave him in the car to go into the store, you can hear him barking clear across the parking lot. Or if he thinks we're doing something outside that he should be involved in, he'll go off then too.
I'm not sure how to stop this. I tell Festus before I leave the car that I'll be right back and for him to be a good boy. Makes no difference. He has a fit when we work cows because he wants to get in there and "help", but at his age, he's stuck on the sidelines and that riles him to no end.
Festus brought a toy to the car with him once and he's left it in there so he has something to do while he's waiting.
Good luck!
