Excessive Growling

Our Australian Shepherd—Black Lab mix can be a very good and cute dog, but she has some strange behavior issues. Background: was sort of nippy as a puppy, and children were a bit playful.

Now, whenever there is any noise that indicates there are people in the house, such as walking around, she growls, and retreats to her favorite spots. We don't have a confining house, and she growls even when she is in a different room than people. She doesn't growl much outside, and has NEVER bitten anyone, but she growls even at her favorite people, and no one knows why. We have never done anything to provoke this behavior.
