HELP! 3-Year-Old Mini Aussie Crying Randomly

by Alex
(Denver, CO)

So happy to have found this group!

My partner and I have a 3 year old Mini Aussie (Biggie Smalls) and he is the sweetest thing ever. When he was about 1 we started leaving him with a friend to watch him and our house when we went on short trips (4 days max), the sitter has known him for his whole life and stayed at the house at night so our pup was never alone for too long. On the second or third trip, our sitter reported that Biggie was yowling and screaming at random times, it started with a whimper and then went int full blown screams and yowls. We got home from the trip and this behavior subsided after a day, so I figured it was separation anxiety.

A few months later, one day he started this behavior again, but while we were both home and hadn't gone anywhere in a while. Ever since, this happens for 1-2 days about 4 times a year. I have taken him to the vet in fear he has a reoccurring ulcer, but everything has been fine. The only think I haven't done yet is an x-ray.

I am posting today because it has just started happening again yesterday and today, and I have never met anyone with a similar problem so I am hoping someone can help shed some light on this behavior.

Biggie is extremely active and lively, even during the periods when he throws these fits. He is fixed so I doubt that it is hormonal. There are not any perceivable changes to his demeanor during these times except the random outbursts of wailing and crying at the top of his lungs. I know it might be for attention but sometimes it even happens when he is sitting on my lap and I am petting him.

Any and all feedback is appreciated! Thank you!
