How Can I Help Our Aussie Get Along With Our Cats?

We adopted a 2 year old male (fixed) Aussie about one month ago. He has adjusted well, is active and loved, but has run our cats off. We live in a rural setting and have (well, we did have) three outdoor cats. Our cats spent most of their time hunting for birds and mice and sleeping on our back porch. We had a Golden Retriever for 12 years and the cats and our Golden got along super well. Well our new Aussie arrived and has completely chased our cats off. We feel terrible and crate our dog at night in the garage and put lots of food on the back porch for the cats to eat in the night. Most days the food has been eaten by morning. Our Aussie had not had much exposure to cats before we adopted him... Any suggestions how we can possibly help our animals to at least peacefully co-exist?
