How Can I Stop My Australian Shepherd From Chasing Cars?

by Mary

My 5-year-old Aussie has recently developed a love for chasing cars. We have a large plot of unfenced land on a road that doesn’t see much traffic. So when a cat or truck drives by, my dog will chase after it and completely ignores my commands. I’m thinking of training him with an ecollar.

Does anyone have any experience with training your pups with one of these or troubles with chasing cars?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you

I have used an ecollar for a dog who liked to roam, and they do work well. The problem is, you would have to have the collar on the dog all the time and be on watch for any traffic coming so you could use it to call him away.

The better solution would be an invisible fence, which could be strung around the property. The collar would still be on the dog whenever he was outside, but the shock fence would keep him away from the road.
