I Have a One-Year-Old Australian Shepherd: Is That a Good Age to Get Another Puppy?

by Jess

We have one Aussie, a one-year-old female named Willow. We were thinking of getting a sibling for her. But I’m unsure if this is a good age to get another puppy? And if so, should we get a male or another female?

Willow is pretty laid-back and she’s just the perfect dog but she’s used to all the attention. My fiancée is concerned she’ll be aggressive or her temperament will change if we get another dog. She is my first of this breed so any feedback is helpful!

I am not answering the question that you asked. But I am bringing up something that you might not have considered. Have you thought about fostering a dog? There are Aussie rescue organizations in some parts of the U.S. as well as other breed rescues.

If you foster a dog, you are not committed to the lifetime of that dog. This would give you an opportunity to see how well your own dog adjusts to having another full-time canine companion, not to mention the fact that you will become part of the team that finds a permanent home for your foster.

Just a thought.
